If your connection works well near the router but fails in the bedroom, office, or patio, you likely have a coverage problem—not necessarily a slow internet plan.
Five ways to improve coverage
- Move the router. Place it out in the open, away from metal cabinets and thick walls.
- Test the weak room. Check signal strength and speed with the same device in several locations.
- Check interference. Neighbors' networks, appliances, and building materials can weaken Wi-Fi.
- Use a wired access point when possible. Ethernet-connected access points offer reliable coverage without repeating the radio signal.
- Consider mesh Wi-Fi. A properly placed multi-node system can help in larger homes where wiring isn't practical.
Extender or mesh?
An extender can help with one small weak spot if it receives a strong signal. Mesh is generally easier to manage when several rooms need better coverage. Neither can fix a failing internet connection.
Looking for better coverage?
Before buying new equipment, identify whether the issue is your internet service, router placement, or wireless coverage.
